LINE Bank Japan the Japanese LINE × Mizuho joint-venture digital bank.

LINE Bank Japan launched in 2021 as the Japanese counterpart to LINE Bank Taiwan, operating under the same LINE × Mizuho joint venture structure that established the Taiwan operation in 2019. The customer charter focuses on integrating digital banking services into the LINE messaging ecosystem that anchors social communication, content distribution, payment, and adjacent digital services across the Japanese market.

THE CHALLENGE

Cross-border replication of the Taiwan deployment with deep LINE-app integration.

LINE Bank Japan had to replicate the LINE × Mizuho joint-venture digital-bank model that succeeded in Taiwan, this time for the larger Japanese market with ninety million LINE app users. The platform needed deep integration with the LINE messaging surface, account opening, transfers, payment, product enrollment, balance inquiry, all accessible inline within the messaging app. Cross-border engineering reuse and Mizuho's regulatory framework drove the implementation approach.

The Bankware solution is BX Core Banking Platform plus BX components, BX-M Java application framework, BX-I interface integrator, BX-PF product factory, replicating the configuration that delivered the Taiwan operation. The engineering team that delivered Taiwan also delivered Japan, supporting the cross-border replication that the joint venture pursued. Personalized financial product recommendations are surfaced through the LINE channel, leveraging the social and messaging context that LINE provides.

Banking flows, account opening, transfers, payment, product enrollment, balance inquiry, are accessible inline within the messaging surface that ninety million Japanese LINE users access daily. The integration with LINE Pay extends the digital wallet experience into the banking product set, supporting peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, and the broader payment ecosystem that LINE Pay operates across Japan.
